Shared Pecha-Kucha presentations on Internet Safety and Creativity, which were lots of fun and got folks jazzed about PowerPoint once again. Looked into Photo Story and Voice Thread, need to unblock Voice Thread. Talked about the tiers and moving teachers out of tier one starting with the safety class. Brian and Lexi are now proud parents! Emilie Marie was born on the 29th. Congratulations MacNevin Family!

Questions about COPPA and names. First names are O.K., some using initials (first/last), first names, or online nicknames. O.K. to use first names but caution because of links to school home page, etc. Some blogs links to classroom webpages, some don't mention city, etc.

Use open house as an opportunity to share blogs and wiki pages and address safety. Pull parents in as support.
How are we using wikis? Can we upload some assignments as practice?

What tools are we using now? What projects are we developing? Opportunities for collaboration?
Survey Monkey re:tech use at home. Digital camera? internet? posting from home? keyboarding games? Service learning opportunities with tech support. http://www.surveymonkey.com/ Let's design a survey for our classes!

Where will our next meeting place be? Wireless? Topics of conversation?

Elise IS a shining star! Thanks so much for the delish din-din and dessert. Shine on, Girl, Shine on!

You can ALSO insert new WIDGET surveys into your wikispace via "survey gizmo".

Tried the wireless at Stanellos which worked very well. The nachos and Mountain Bike special pizza were delicious. After a lengthy discussion of the drawbacks of NCLB we moved on to planning for fall Dream On meetings. We discussed our varying degrees of understanding of the Children's Online Privacy Protection Act (COPPA) and our need to clarify expectations around the use of Web 2.0 tools and safety. Hence, our first meeting this fall will be focused on how to keep our students safe while they use the Internet.

Teachers can’t meet the pro cert – no definition of technology

Coaching in Technology
real meaningful – coaches are users of technology that support the use of technology and work with teachers to integrate the technology into what they are currently doing with support and access ongoing to the person. Help to plan lessons, units, Help when needed. Make it effective. Support for new technologies. We are relying on students to learn from them. A more side by side support.
Modern Technologies need to be the focus of moving forward for us.

Support of teachers where they are at –
Buy in of the ultimate goal
Not sure about the date for the January meeting yet, Carolyn is working on it. We were thinking about a “Toolbox” theme. We have been exploring technology tools, how do we keep them organized? Is there a toolbox out there anywhere that would work for us?
On another note, I would love to move into the research side of things. My kids love research projects and I would like to get them walking down the road towards bigger, self-directed projects. Has anyone used the Big 6 model? http://www.big6.com/
Any thoughts on the Information Literacy Standards created by the American Association of School Librarians?
http://www.geocities.com/Heartland/Lake/8248/barnes/myrtle100/myrtlenorton.jpg
Does anyone have standards that they use to guide development of research projects? I wonder how the skills necessary to teach students how to be an effective and efficient researcher relate to the technology tiers, do they overlap? I would think they must! Anyway, food for thought before the next get together.

Dinner was Southwestern Chicken Stew the recipe is on another writeboard, techolate which is a combination of chocolate and technology which seemed appropriate at the time. :) Techolate is a great place to share recipes and silliness that doesn't fit as well here. The password is coco.
We had a bit of discussion about coaching and how nice it would be to have technology integration included as a choice for coaching.
Carloyn showed how she was using Google Earth to link maps and videos to support her geography lessons. Carolyn you might want to check outTim Lauer's blog, he is deep into Google Earth! Glad that teachers still have access to Google Video, hope it doesn’t go away!
Paula shared her video ipod and how she uses it to store videos and pictures in addition to music. She especially liked the Crazy Frog Brothers video that reminded all of us of our 5th-8th grade boys.
Kathy shared her first grade wiki page. Her first graders are dictating the captions for the pictures that Kathy includes. Kathy prints only the first page of her wiki for parents, if they want the pictures, they have to log on. Kathy we want to see a photo of your first grade cowboy!
Elise shared how her students are using Survey Monkey for school projects. One class is conducting a bullying survey and one student conducting a hot lunch survey as a portion of her research project.
Jaylani shared how she inpires her students to reach 20 words per minute using Ultra Key and how she rotates students through the computers.
All in all a very fun night. We missed Ann and Jenny.

Notes from 10/27/06 Meeting of Dream On tech group.
Discussion included:
Friday Night Session
Inlcude some of the following talk…
Talking about issues that affect us a technology users and teachers.
Not being able to delete the print que!
And not knowing when software is updated/changed
New Tools to think about
Net trekker search – now has an audio componant really nice
But is limited to sites that teachers have selected
If you haven’t visted new search engine you need tol
grokker. com – gives topic outline of search content or a visual map of search content
What do teachers need to move ahead using technology?
We had a good discussion about … do teachers use lesson plans on the web? We are thinking that a site w/ tools, WORD worksheets, powerpoints or whatever aligned with GLAE would be much better than online lesson plans
“I keep bookmarks” site would be great. We need a place to dump everything we have maybe organize by GLEs. Keep it from year to year. Start with the producers & get teachers to become users so that they become producers. YEAH!
What is the New Digital Divide:
Digital divide is now those who can and those who can’t. What do we do to convince teachers that technology needs to be addressed, used by studnets and teachers, integrated into instruction. If you you currently took technology out of school would it change how we teach and learn? If the answer is yes then we are using technology for learning.
When tooking at Teir 1, 2, and 3
Where are the students currently in their use of technology?
We are thinking kiddos are at Teir 2 and when a constructivist classroom approach with project based learning is created then Kids become the teachers and helpers and givers of the how to knowledge that moves them to Teir 3.
Project Based Learning means doing lots of differnt things all at once in the classroom. Our Admin needs to understand what to look for in a tech class.
WASL-how does tech support the WASL?
What number of computers should a Teir 2 or 3 classroom have?
What is the critical mass: 2:1 works well in an integrated classroom
What about 1:1 laptops what would that look like?
Interesting connections to what we talked about but didn’t have enough time to share last night…
laptops for elementary?

Found a great blog post (19 year old author) on new Web 2.0 tools for students and teachers. Really cool stuff there!

Clarence Fisher presents his thoughts on Global Literacy at the recent K-12 Online Conference. Thought provoking and perhaps something principals might look for when they pop in our rooms.
